I've shared at length many things from my journey into Buffer and how game changer their culture and team is.
Today I want to share my take on something that's sold as a perk but I think it goes way beyond that: The 4 day work week is truly transformational for me.
I'm at the 90 day mark in my Buffer journey, and I still feel energized about the work to be done every week. There are ups and downs of course, but I am honestly excited about the week every single Monday morning. That has not happened to me, in a consistent way, in ages (if ever). I do think 70% its due to the role, the people around me, the culture, etc. But the other 30% is because of the 4 day work week. I work very intentionally those 4 days, I have to be relentless in how I manage my time and my focus - and then I have a real 3 day break. This means I have quality family time, some alone time, time for errands... I feel like I can rest and I am not playing catch-up with life.
I think I do have better work performance. But that's not the point - I can live better, I have better quality of life as a human being. That's the real goal.
I would love for it to become the norm. I've seen early signal in other industries: my two favorite restaurants only open four days a week, against the six-days-a-week, twelve-hours-a-day schedules of everywhere around them. They are run by small staff, very intentional in each decision, everything crafted with love, care and time.
