To create more, spend time in a writing context rather than social media

Up: § Content creation and distribution

It’s my belief that if you want to create and share more online, one of the most important things you can do is spend time in a writing context, rather than time on various the social networks.

This might be a note taking app (my choice is Bear), or it might be in your favorite social media management tool. It might be writing with pen and paper in nature. The focus should be on content creation, rather than consuming.

It’s challenging, because to actually post to social media we generally go into social media. The box to write and share a post is right there next to the feed, next to the discover tab. And before you know it, you’re sucked in. This is a key reason that there’s so much value in using a product such as Buffer to create and schedule your posts. It’s an environment focused on the content and distribution, rather than consumption.

It’s so easy to lose hours scrolling the social networks, they’ve been specifically optimized for you to do that. How long have you spent in the discover tab of Instagram? Or scrolling Twitter? It’s worth reflecting on and thinking about the balance you personally want to strike between consuming social media vs creating content, sharing it, growing your network and furthering your passions and mission.
