Up: § Compensation at Buffer

We have a clear philosophy which guides how we think about pay at Buffer. Our philosophy is derived from our values and operating principles, and has been shaped over the many years Buffer has existed. , the shape both the questions we ask ourselves and how we answer them, the Compensation Philosophy documents our principles on compensation to help us determine what should always be true even as the salary formula changes over time.

We have four principles that guide our compensation-related decisions. We strive for Buffer’s approach to salary, equity, and benefits to be:

  • Fair
  • Simple
  • Generous

    The Salary System is designed with our compensation philosophy in mind. Additionally, the Salary System allows us to align with our desire to reward high performers. We expect to have high performers in every role on every team and at every level. The new Salary System better reflects this expectation as we now have greater consistency on how we are calibrating titles, levels and pay across the whole company.

The Salary System also affords us the opportunity to evolve things like: the Percentiles used in each area and even the percentage jumps between each level. We have in mind that over time we will continue to evaluate the market data inputs and bring more consistency to the percentiles used across teams.
